The Augusta Margaret River Mail comes out on a Wednesday, with all the news of the southwest. This is a 30 point summary of today’s paper.
1. Two of our local fellows will appear on TV with their invention – the Saints Safety Barrel, which is a floating device that contains flares and other things you’ll need if your boat sinks.
2. GetUp’s lemon-powered torch will be in Margaret River on Sunday, for the climate torch relay.
3. The cosmodome (a portable planetarium) will be at this year’s Margaret River show.
4. There’ll be a phone tossing contest at the show too.
5. The first Farmers Market of the season is on this Saturday.
6. Accommodation providers can apparently be fined $10 000 if underage people are caught drinking on their premises, including in their rooms. The kids themselves only get $200.
7. People are invited to help complete the mural at the community kindy.
8. Several kilometres of purple bras will decorate Augusta this Saturday.
9. Tony and Ken have manned the scoreboard at the footy for 8 years, and they are finishing up.
10. If you’re between 2 and 5, dress up as a fairy or a pirate for story time at the library.
11. Snakes will be starting to come out and the vet says you need to watch your pets. If they get bitten and stop breathing, owners can give them mouth-to-nose resuscitation.
12. One of our circus school kids played the piano (the National Anthem, no less) at the old folks’ home.
13. A local man grew a 10kg organic sweet potato. The world record is 22kg.
14. Bender the wonder dog got his own page spread in the latest Surfwest magazine. Bender has won prizes, been on TV and radio, is owned by a man named Scar, and gets excited when they approach a surf break.
15. The Australian Girls Choir is coming soon.
16. The Margaret River Chocolate Company won lots of medals and the Champion Chocolate award at the Perth Royal Show.
17. Residents of the elderly home have been taking kitchen tours so they can see where their food is coming from and feel a bit more connected to the whole process.
18. Chris Isaak will be the guy at this year’s Leeuwin Concert.
19. 40 resumes were submitted to the vet for their receptionist position.
20. There’s a vacancy for a horse-rider on a thoroughbred training farm.
21. There’s a hay baler for sale at $5500.
22. You can buy goat meat for $15/kg.
23. You can buy sheep poo for $7.50 for a 35 litre bag.
24. A dogsitter is required.
25. There are some doves free to a good home.
26. Another one of our circus school kids demonstrates his starting stance at little athletics.
27. By now you should be able to run for 12-15 minutes without a rest if you’re planning to compete in the fun run.
28. The Margaret River women’s football (soccer) team won the double – the cup and the league, for the first time ever.
29. The Margaret River Senior High School volleyball team went to Perth and won the 2008 Volleyball WA’s High School Cup.
30. The forecast is for showers later today.
